Why doing AUTONOMIA

Since 2010, the number of people 65 years of age and older has grown faster than the population under the age of 65. In Quebec, this represents more than 16 percents of the population – due mainly to the aging of the ‘baby-boomers’ born between 1946 and 1966.  In order to adjust to this new demographic reality, there has been a global shift towards assistive technologies designed to allow people to remain at home as long as possible. This shift comes as more than 30 million Americans grapple with a loss of mobility and autonomy.  This account for new born with handicap from birth as well as individual losing their autonomy and mobility with time due to health problem, accident or aging.  In 2006, Quebec had 768,1406 residents with disabilities – 10 percent of the population at that time. Among people between 65 and 74 years-old in Quebec, one in four (25,6 percent) has a problem completing activities of daily living. This number skyrockets to one in two beyond the age of 75 years old.

ACCORD-Sante Estrie (SAGE-Innovation) was established to support regional economic development for companies and organizations which support the autonomy of individuals through preventive or supportive measures. After a first succesful event in 2014, we are renewing with AUTONOMIA.  The event will be held in the Eastern Townships and we are inviting every individual, organization or corporation to share their solutions designed to improve care and services for people with disabilities. At ACCORD-Sante Estrie we believe we should all work together to allow people at risk for, or living with disabilities, to live longer with dignity.
